Different Types of Green Paint
There are primarily two types of Green Paint — for the sake of discussion we'll call them "green paint" and "extreme green paint."
Green Paint is healthier than traditional paints because the paint base contains either low VOCs (volatile organic compounds) or no VOCs. This reduces the emission of pollutants from the paint product during and after application. The colorant in these products do contain VOCs, however, most customers feel the amount of VOCs in the colorant is so small that it does not warrant more stringent green options.
Extreme Green Paint delivers the purest paint available as it is completely free of VOCs ... both the base and the colorant. One drawback of Extreme Green Paint is the reduction in color choice available.
Cost Differences of Green Paint
The cost difference for Green Paint versus regular is small compared to the advantages. A gallon of Green Paint will run about $2 more per gallon than traditional paint.
Extreme Green Paint, however, is more expensive ... and can be up to three-times more costly than traditional products.
DEPEND PAINTING & DECORATING offers both Green and Extreme Green Paint options to our customers.
AIM Legislation in Effect
Illinois AIM (Architertural Industrial Maintenance) legislation is in effect. Below are some of the most important changes:
- Oil-based paints, stains, and varnishes will no longer be allowed for either interior or exterior use on homes.
- Oil-based paints, stains, or varnishes will not be allowed in the interior of insitutional, hospitality, commercial or healthcare facilities.
- In a shop setting, the use of oil-based stains and varnishes will be allowed, but not in any other setting. They will be available for sale in quarts, but it will be illegal to combine four quarts into a single gallon container.
- Aerosol cans will still be allowed.
There are some additional elements to these restrictions, and fines are expected to range from $1,500 to $20,000.
It's imperative that your painting contractor understand these new regulations and the impact they may have on your building maintenance.
